Examination Requirements

Chapter 1 General Rules
1. Purpose
The purpose of the training requirements is to outline the association’s expectations,
organize information and set the minimal teaching standards for instructors to follow. This
will prevent misunderstandings as to the standard goals, objectives, evaluation standards,
and policies of the association. It must also be noted that this procedure serves as a
general training guideline and an actual examination may increase in difficulty but never
decrease in difficulty from the guide outlined below in chapter 2 of this procedure.

2. Evaluation Factors
a. The association will evaluate its members on the following factors:
 -Basic techniques (kihon)
 -Form (kata)
 -Sparring (kumite)
 -Correct timing, distance and judgment
 -Mental, physical and emotional strength
 -Etiquette and manners
b. As a student progresses towards the dan level, the following factors are also taken
into consideration:
 -Character
 -Training attitude and organizational commitment
 -Understanding of fundamental techniques
 -Shape of techniques
 -Performance of kata
 -Offensive and defensive kumite
 -Foundation in kihon, kata and kumite
 -Potential to attain higher levels of skill etc.

3. Standard Belt Colors
The all affiliated members will follow the international standards for belt colors as listed
below:

 11. 3 Kyu – 2 Kyu
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:

 Age uke , uraken, gyaku tsuki
 Soto ude uke , empi uchi (kiba dachi), uraken , gyaku tsuki (zenkutsu dachi)

 12. 2 Kyu – 1 Kyu
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:

 Age uke, (uraken or gedan bari), gyaku tsuki
 Soto ude uke, empi uchi (kiba dachi), uraken, gyaku tsuki (zenkutsu dachi)
 Uchi ude uke, jodan kizami tsuki, gyaku tsuki
 
            Stance: kokutsu dachi
 Chudan shuto uke, kizami mae geri, nukite (zenkutsu dachi)

             Stance: zenkutsu dachi, kamae
 Mae ren geri
 Mae geri, mawashi geri, yoko geri kekomi, ushiro geri
 
            Stance: kiba dachi
 Yoko geri keage, (stepping change leg) yoko geri kekomi
 Stance: zenkutsu dachi, shomen (no moving)
 Mae geri, yoko geri keage (same leg to the front)
b. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kime waza:
 Stance: zenkutsu dachi, kamae
 Gyaku tsuki

c. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kata:
Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion, Empi (examinee – one from this group)
Heian 1-5, Tekki Shodan (examiner – one from this group)
d. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kumite:
Jiyu ippon kumite - one of each technique with the following attacks jodan oi
    tsuki, chudan oi tsuki, chudan mae geri, chudan yoko geri kekomi, chudan
            mawashi geri.
e. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following shinpan:
Knowledge of referee rules
 Using rules as a judge

 14. 1 Dan – 2 Dan
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:
Stance: jiyu na kamae
 Sanbon tsuki (step 1 ½ stance on first move)
 Mae geri, gyaku tsuki
 Kizami tsuki (kosa dachi), mae geri, chudan oi tsuki
 (back) age uke, (forward) mawashi geri, ushiro geri, uraken uchi, chudan oi tsuki
 (forward) mawashi geri, (forward) upper ashi barai, gyaku tsuki
 (forward) mawashi geri, (forward) lower ashi barai, gyaku tsuki
 
            Stance: zenkutsu dachi, shomen (no moving)
 Mae geri, yoko geri keage, mawashi geri (same leg, 3 directions)
b. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kata:
Jitte, Hangetsu, Gankaku, Tekki Nidan, Bassai Sho, Kanku Sho (examinee – one
    from this group)
Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion, Empi (examiner – one from this group)
c. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kumite:
Jiyu kumite
d. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following shinpan:
Knowledge of referee rules
 Using rules as a judge


15. 2 Dan – 3 Dan
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:
Foundational techniques specified by examiner
b. Teaching Requirements:
The candidate may be asked to demonstrate his or her ability to teach basic
    techniques and or kata as specified by examiner

c. Research Paper:
The candidate may be asked to write a short paper on his or her research in
    karate-do

d. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kata:
Jiin, Tekki Sandan, Chinte, Nijushiho, Sochin (examinee – one from this group)
 Jitte, Hangetsu, Gankaku, Tekki Nidan, Bassai Sho, Kanku Sho (examiner – one
    from this group)
 Optional: Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion, Empi (examiner – one from this group)
 Optional: Heian Shodan – Heian Godan (examiner – one from this group)
e. Candidates for this grade will explain the following techniques:
One combination in terms of technical points
 One combination in terms of application
 Bunkai for any one of the 15 shotokan kata
f. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kumite:
 Jiyu ippon kumite (techniques to be specified by examiner)
 Jiyu kumite (minimum 2 fights)
 Report about tokui-waza and explanation to higher grades.

 16. 3 Dan – 4 Dan
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:
Foundational techniques specified by examiner
b. Teaching Requirements:
 The candidate may be asked to demonstrate his or her ability to teach
    intermediate techniques and or kata as specified by examiner

c. Candidates for this grade must submit a research paper with the following conditions:
Paper must not be less than 1500 words
 Paper must be submitted 2 weeks prior to examination
 Paper must discuss one of the following topics:
 Body dynamics, Muscle coordination, and forces related to upper or lower
    body power transmission (punching, kicking, sweeping, striking and stance),
    and or any topics the examiner assigns.
d. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kata:
 Wankan, Meikyo, Gojushio sho, Gojushio dai, Unsu (examinee – two from this
    group)
Examiner may choose any one or more of the 26 Shotokan kata
 Examiner may chose to ask the candidate to explain the bunkai for any section of
    chosen kata.

e. Candidates for this grade will explain the following techniques:
One combination in terms of technical points
 One combination in terms of application
 Bunkai for kata of choice and bunkai for any one of the 15 shotokan kata
f. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kumite:
Jiyu ippon kumite (techniques to be specified by examiner)
 Jiyu kumite (minimum 2 fights)
 Self-defense (against: 3 x grabbing, 3 x knife- and 3 x stick attack)
 Report about tokui-waza and explanation to higher grades.

17. 4 Dan – 10 Dan
a. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kihon or basics:
Foundational techniques specified by examiner
b. Teaching Requirements:
The candidate may be asked to demonstrate his or her ability to teach advance
    techniques and or kata as specified by examiner
c. Candidates for this grade must submit a research paper with the following conditions:
 Paper must not be less than 1500 words
 Paper must be submitted 2 weeks prior to examination
 Paper must discuss one of the following topics:
 Body dynamics, Muscle coordination, and forces related to upper or lower
    body power transmission (punching, kicking, sweeping, striking and stance),
    and or any topics the examiner assigns.
d. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kata:
 Examinee may choose two of the 26 Shotokan kata. These katas must not be
    chosen from Heian 1-5, Tekki 1, Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai.
 Examiner may choose any one or more of the 26 shotokan kata
 Examiner may chose to ask the candidate to explain the bunkai for any section of
    chosen kata.

e. Candidates for this grade will explain the following techniques:
One combination in terms of technical points
 One combination in terms of application
 Bunkai for kata of choice and bunkai for any one of the 15 shotokan kata

f. Candidates for this grade will be examined on the following kumite:
 Jiyu ippon kumite (techniques to be specified by examiner)
Jiyu kumite (minimum 2 fights)
Self-defense (against: 3 x grabbing, 3 x knife- and 3 x stick attack)
Report about tokui-waza and explanation to higher grades.

Chapter 3 Yūdansha Expectations
18. The following criteria are expected for all members that has the grade of Shodan.
 Demonstrate a solid understanding of karate using the fundamental techniques.
 Demonstrate the correct shape of karate techniques.
 Demonstrate a solid performance of karate kata.
 Demonstrate effective offensive and defensive kumite.
 Demonstrate the proper foundation in kihon, kata and kumite.
 Demonstrate the potential to attain higher levels of skill.

19. The following criteria are expected for all members that has the grade of Nidan.
 Demonstrate an advance understanding of karate using the fundamental techniques.
 Demonstrate an advance performance of karate techniques.
 Demonstrate an advanced performance of kata.
 Demonstrate effective and aggressive kumite.
 Demonstrate an enhanced foundation in kihon, kata and kumite.
 Demonstrate a basic understanding of karate philosophy.
 Demonstrate higher levels of skill.

20. The following criteria are expected for all members that has the grade of Sandan.
 Demonstrate expert understanding of karate using the fundamental techniques.
 Demonstrate expert performance of karate techniques.
 Demonstrate an expert performance of kata.
 Demonstrate effective and aggressive yet controlled kumite.
 Demonstrate an expert foundation in kihon, kata and kumite.
 Demonstrate expert levels of skill.
 Demonstrate a standard understanding of karate philosophy.
 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Shotokan Syllabus until Sandan.
 Demonstrate instructional ability.
 Demonstrate question response ability.

21. The following criteria are expected for all members that has the grade of Yondan.
 Demonstrate master understanding of karate using the fundamental techniques.
 Demonstrate master performance of karate techniques.
 Demonstrate a mastery performance of kata.
 Demonstrate effective mastery in kumite.
 Demonstrate mastery in the foundation of kihon, kata and kumite.
 Demonstrate master levels of skill.
 Demonstrate a complete understanding of the philosophy of karate.
 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the entire Shotokan Syllabus.
 Demonstrate superb instructional ability.
 Demonstrate superb question response ability.
 Must be able to apply karate to all aspects of life.

22. The following criteria are expected for all members that has the grade of Godan.
 Demonstrate high-level master understanding of karate using the fundamental
     techniques.
 Demonstrate high-level master performance of karate techniques.
 Demonstrate a mastery performance of kata.
 Demonstrate high-level mastery in kumite.
 Demonstrate a high-level mastery in the foundation of kihon, kata and kumite.
 Demonstrate high-level master levels of skill.
 Demonstrate a complete understanding of the philosophy of karate.
 Demonstrate knowledge of entire Shotokan Syllabus.
 Demonstrate high-level instructional ability.
 Demonstrate high level question response ability.
 Demonstrate the ability to apply technique in one’s own unique way.

23. All examinees testing for Shodan and above must demonstrate the criteria as listed on
chapter 3 of this procedure.
